On August 3, a man with a knife went on a rampage in Bundang, a wealthy suburb of Seoul.
According to reports, on this day at 5:59 PM, police received calls that “A man was stabbing people with a knife” at the glitzy AK Plaza, a popular shopping mall near Seohyun Station in Seongnam.
Police quickly arrived at the scene at 6:05 PM and apprehended the suspect.
According to police, the suspect drove his mother’s car into a group of pedestrians before running into the mall with a knife and stabbing people on two separate floors.
News reports state that in total 9 people were stabbed and 5 people were hit by the suspect’s vehicle. The victims were transported to the hospital, where 12 of the 14 are reported to be in critical condition.
The suspect, who reportedly works for a delivery service, has since claimed that he has a personality disorder and that he committed the crimes “To bring awareness to the fact that several people have hired a hit man to kill me.” Authorities are currently assessing the suspect’s mental health.
The attack marks the second knife incident in less than a month after a similar knife attack in Seoul’s Sillim station.
